Triple Digit Club Tour

This means I have to virtually give away my banana cookie secrets.

In which Emily gives you a tour of her house.

I think that some people are subscribed to me twice, if that is possible. They show up on my sub list twice, and when I type out all the names, if I don't include them two times, the numbers don't match. And then some other people who subscribe to me, their subscription box is filled with "We sub4sub!" Which I don't do.... I guess this is the equivilant of all the porn/business bots following me on twitter?

Travel Vlog: Los Angeles, CA

1: In which Emily recounts her time spent in LA during the Michael Jackson memorial service, etc.

http://peoplemath.blogspot.com

2: In which Emily concludes her tale of time spent in LA, specifically, finding the wall of Solutions Audio in Silverlake (from Elliott Smith's Figure 8), checking out celebrity stars from the Walk of Fame and some other crap around Beverly Hills.

At some point, I'm going to get to the end of the trip and have to start at the beginning and work up to Bozeman. Only thing is, there isn't any video footage from the first part of my trip, as I purchased my camera in Iowa. Oh well. There are lots of pictures.

I did so much in LA. As I go through my pictures to find ones to add, I remember things that I didn't even mention doing. Oh well.

Project For Awesome: Literacy Volunteers

I haven't yet counted myself. Most of the comments are spamWOW. I hope the number of correct counting is not more than I can afford....

SantaCon and Tom Milsom's NYC Launch Party

In which Emily recounts her time spent this past Saturday (12/12/09) in New York City with her mother, stumbling upon SantaCon and meeting Charlie McDonnell, Edd Plant, Tom Milsom, Alex Day, Michael Markman, and some other YouTubers / Nerdfighters.

soon there will be more than two full songs here.

So the guys were all like "oh, oh, just buy our CDs* online," and I said to Alex that he wouldn't be able to sign it then. We both decided that it would be appropriate for Alan Lastufka to sign it. That is probably what I'll do.

But I can always bring them to VidCon. They're going, right?

You're going, right?

*except Edd Plant who has run plum out of discs and isn't planning on selling anymore physical copies. Edd Plant, how will you sign my mp3s?

OMG! The sub knows who sxephil is!!!

In which Emily (who is 24) shares about students' misperceptions about her, how Philip DeFranco got brought into this, and probably says "PUH lease!" one too many times.

The bit at the end I almost made into a second video, but it didn't quite seem worth it.

They are always surprised when I've seen some viral video. Seriously guys?

If only they knew how much time I spend on YouTube.

Speaking, a recently received a friend request on Facebook from my favorite student...who is in 9th grade in one of the districts I subbed in. Immediately, I called my mom. "Is there any reason I shouldn't accept him?"

"I don't think so. You don't do anything inappropriate on Facebook."

Then he left me a comment about my video You Spell Your Name Wrong, saying that he knows every single kid I mentioned (which is probably a hyperbole...there were names from several different school districts).

This is probably going to cost me my job.

UPDATE: Even if I had more than 100 subscribers, I'd still be allowed to fangirl about this.

I guess anyone can comment on YouTube, just not everyone should.

Not that many people see my videos, and most of the people who do don't have YouTube accounts...(I always harass my poor friends and family on facebook by embedding them), so this has its upsides. The comments I get are generally considerate, either kind, or perhaps containing a touch of constructive criticism. So I was surprised to receive this comment:

I also wasn't quite sure if it was referring to me. Honestly, I've made more terrible videos before. Did you see that Bozeman vlog? The story is interesting, the video isn't. I felt pretty good about this one, it came out like I wanted it to. Wouldn't this comment be better suited on a different video of mine, or perhaps on my wall? I felt I should do something, so I played it this way:

Um, right. I'm a substitute teacher. I get crap thrown at me, and generally picked on, insulted and tortured by mean-spirited children...to my face...on a daily basis. This ill-conceived comment deserves little more than a scoff.

But then, just to see if this person made videos that this person felt SHOULD be made, or to see if this person was a troll by nature, I checked out (his or her?) channel page.

It seems this person joined YouTube for the express purpose of posting such a comment on my video.

Should I be honored?

Should I be hurt?

It honestly makes me wonder if LurkeyMerk is one of my facebook friends who hates me but refuses to block me. I've met 99% of my facebook friends in real life (it is sort of a requirement of mine, one I'm willing to bend if I happen to watch videos of you). The chances are pretty high. Otherwise, I suppose it is a sign of a slightly extended reach, and that's to be celebrated.

You Spell Your Name Wrong

In which Emily shares about how the interesting things parents do when selecting names for their children make her job that much harder.

Thank you to Jer at http://www.nyquil.org for making a widescreen version of the TV test pattern.
You were right. It was useful to someone.

I try to be open minded about most things, I've heard all about registers of speech and communication styles, that different dialects are not "wrong" or "right"....but I wish there was a little more agreement with certain things that affect my life.

The idea with registers of speech is that you have different styles of speech (registers) that you use with people you are more intimate with (usually involving more slang, coloquialisms and the like) as opposed to people you are business like with (usually employing jargon, proper grammar, and and five-dollar words you are comfortable using), with a whole range of in-betweens. The hope is that though you may have your more intimate speech, you are able to use the business-like register when the situation calls for it.

I want to enforce something like this on names. If your name is from a different language, then it should follow the rules of that tongue. If you want to force a pronunciation of a group of letters that breaks away from the rules of your name's language, you can really only do that to those who you're intimate with.

Maybe I'm being snobbish here.

I've also heard many a teacher complain that it is becoming increasingly difficult to teach phonics when students names are phonetical disasters. If you are basing a name on American English, please base the spelling on the same.

But, do what you want. It's a free country, and you're gonna anyhow.

Recession Crafts

In which Emily recounts selling crafts at Tight Knit in Troy, and discusses how the economy is effecting her.....and how it doesn't really matter.

I feel like this video is pretty boring, but I had taken to footage and wanted to share. The Restys are a great band. The girl who had a stand next to mine had her mother there to help her out. I couldn't do that, I would get too stressed out and be mean to my mom, so I just tell her to stop by. Also, I don't need her help, and my mom is one of the type of people who likes to be doing something. (I'm of that type, too.) Last year I did three days of craft fairs, two days of Tight Knit and one of this other craft fair being run by the Grant Street Arts group (from Albany). The GSA had held their Troy craft fair in the upper level of the Atrium, where the winter farmers' market happens, and it was more expensive to participate in than Tight Knit, so I just did one day of that. Tight Knit had such success last winter that they did weekly craft fairs during the summer, in conjunction with the farmers' market (Monument Square in Troy, NY). Now that it is after November, Tight Knit is occurring inside, upstairs, where the GSA craft fair was. I suppose this is the reason that TK was only one day this year. It would be ridiculous to have the second day in the Frear Building and compete with what they were already doing, next door, in the Atrium.

WiisGiving

Some have mentioned that they think I'm being insulting to my father by calling him an old man at heart. This comment was never intended as an insult, and is merely something I've noticed in my nearly 25 years of acquaintance with the man.

My family's reaction to this video:

My dad thought it was really funny.

My mom thought it was funny too.
"But you know what is not funny? The looks of the couch."

The loveseat is where I like to pile my stuff when I come over, and catching that in the video makes her embarrassed.

I also didn't come out and say it, but my father is very good at bowling IRL. I did mention the three 300s he has bowled.

If you aren't familiar with the sport, a 300 is a perfect game, all strikes, a lifetime goal of many.

His first one was bowled on a Friday the 13th.
